When it comes to going to the doctor for anything, I am very lazy. I accept the fact that my body is a wonderful machine and for the most part it heals itself or at least that is where I am putting my bets and my hopes. I am healthy, so why bother the doctor?
Last week we, the school bus drivers, had our annual TXDOT physicals. Most of us are in the over 40 group, with some of us pushing 70. We even have one incredible guy, Bob, who just celebrated his 80th birthday! Everyone passed the physical with good results. We can still hear and see reasonably well, or at least well enough to drive a bus full of noisy excited children to and from school. None of us are on drugs and as far as I know, no one drinks on the job even though I sometimes think that a couple of margaritas would make it a lot more fun! Kidding there, not happening!! They tell me that is still against the law!
Even though I passed the physical, the examining doctor told me that my knees are in bad shape and that I could possibly be looking at a knee transplant in the very near future. A knee transplant. Me??? You gotta be kidding! Of course, I can barely walk across the parking lot to get into my school bus, and I do spend my spare time in excruiating pain delivering pizzas up hills and down hills out here in Lakeway. But a knee transplant? How am I going to do that? When I drift off to sleep at night, I dream of running the 10ks that I used to love so much...and I dream of playing tennis again, but most of all, I dream of the freedom of movement without the pain.
So, tomorrow with visions of dancing the night away again, I am going to my PCP to see what options are available.
